It is my unfortunate responsibility to share the sad news of the untimely passing of one of our Penn Neurosurgery alumni, Dr. Andrew Freese. Please see the below memorandum that was distributed to the department several weeks ago. I was remiss in not sharing this with our alumni, and I apologize for that oversight.

Dear Department Members:
I am sad to report the passing of an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania neurosurgery residency program, Dr. Andrew Freese. Dr. Freese not only trained in neurosurgery at Penn, but also practiced in the Philadelphia area for many years, most recently serving as chief of neurosurgery and neurosurgical medical director at Brandywine Hospital. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Freese made important contributions to the field of gene therapy applied to neurological disorders. These contributions as well as vignettes that nicely portray Dr. Freese's personal qualities are described in a very moving obituary in today's Philadelphia Inquirer (see link).
On behalf of the department, I extend sincere condolences to Dr. Freese's family, friends, patients, and associates.
